Basic Expedition Leader

Basic Expedition LeaderThis award, formerly known as the BELA, is administered by Sports Leaders UK, a branch of CCPR. It is aimed at those working with Youth groups or similar, who wish to be involved with day journeys on foot and backpacking expeditions. The award is seen as the benchmark for work with groups such as The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The BEL, allows you to lead and instruct groups in low-level rural terrain. It has a great emphasis upon learning and developing leading and instructional skills, as well as the usual camping and navigation. As such it is quite a special award and is often used as a springboard towards MLTUK awards such as Summer Mountain Leader. During this course, candidates should also acquire the National Navigation Awards Scheme: Silver Award. The award consists of 90 hours tuition plus 30 hours consolidation, and is open to anyone over 18 years of age. Candidates should preferably have some previous experience of walking and camping.
