National Navigation Award Scheme

This Nationally recognised scheme allows you to gain a structured level of training and competency, with a map and compass. Divided into three levels o skill and training, the scheme allows you to gradually develop from nothing, or if suitably experienced enter at an appropriate level.
Bronze NNAS Award
Aimed at those with little or no experience. Or those wishing to undertake simple countryside strolls, without the getting lost factor! Topics include: Setting a map, handrails, pacing and timing. We will also cover ticking off features and a basic introduction to Compass work.
Silver NNAS Award
Aimed at those who have completed a Bronze Award, or those who feel they are already competent. Be aware, that many folk who feel competent may still gain much from attaining the Bronze Award. This is the recognised level of competency required by awards such as The Basic Expedition Leader. Topics include: Refresher of Bronze syllabus, point-to-point navigation, attack points, aiming off, Naismith’s Rule, route planning and route cards and more advanced compass techniques
Gold NNAS Award
Aimed at those who have already completed previous awards and those who already possess a high level of skill. This is the recognised level of competency required by awards such as Summer Mountain Leader. Topics include: Consolidation of previous skills, micro and macro navigation, sole use of contour features, worst case navigation.
