Local Cave & Mine Leader : Level One Assessments

Cave Core skills:
 Module 1

With a home theory paper and practical assessment, the areas of group personal clothing and equipment, weather and flooding, action in underground accidents, underground first aid and hypothermia, technical leadership skills for non vertical systems, knowledge of underground hazards, access and conservation, cave geology and hydrology are covered.

Pre requisites: Minimum 30 underground trips  in various locations, a good proportion should be as the leader under supervision.

Duration: Min 1 full day
Min Ratio: 1 to 1
Max Ratio: 1 to 2
Cost: £175 plus travel costs

Note:
Cave Core Skills and Mine Core skills maybe undertaken together in one long day at a ratio of 1 assessor to 1 candidate
Cost: £195

Mine Core skills: Module 6

Over a home theory paper and practical assessment the areas of group personal clothing and equipment, weather and flooding, action in underground accidents, underground first aid and hypothermia, technical leadership skills for non vertical systems, knowledge of mine hazards, access conservation and mines inspections the law, mine history, techniques and geology are covered.

Pre requisites: Minimum 30 underground trips  in various locations, a good proportion should be as the leader under supervision.

Duration: Min 1 full day
Min Ratio: 1 to 1
Max Ratio: 1 to 2
Cost: £175 plus travel costs

Group Leadership Day: Module 2

A practical assessment with a group evaluating at group leadership skills, assistant selection, public relations, organisation and preparation, party conduct, conservation, call out procedure, suitability of venue and all equipment.

Please note your choice of equipment whether your own or not and a possible assistant is also considered in the assessment.

Pre requisites: Cave and/or Mine Core skills assessment passed. Minimum 30 underground trips in various locations, a good proportion should be as the leader under supervision.

DEFINITION OF QUALITY DAYS UNDERGROUND

A quality day should satisfy at least 4 of the following criteria: –

  • Exploration of a new route or cave (new to the candidate that is)
  • Exploration of caves with a streamway that responds to rainfall.
  • Incorporates at least 4 to 5 hours of underground exploration.
  • An experience that develops an individuals caving knowledge, skills and awareness.
  • Incorporates caving skills above the level of the candidate’s qualification.
  • Of the candidates own making i.e. the candidate is to lead the trip, or it is one done with peers and not led by an external source.
  • For level 1, involves the application of vertical skills, digging or exploration.
  • For level 2 an extension of vertical skills, digging or exploration.
