Introduction to Indoor Climbing
If you have never climbed before then this would be a great way to start. Climbing walls are an ideal place to increase confidence. Enjoy the improved mental and physical fitness that comes with climbing. The day will cover basic safety awareness, introduction to belaying (holding the ropes) route selection and the basics of climbing techniques. Ideal for anyone looking to start a new hobby, or a group looking for a day’s fun. More exciting than going to a Gym. Easy to grasp the basics. Warm and dry all year.
Prior experience: None necessary

Introduction to Outdoor Climbing
Climbing has increased in popularity faster than any other sport. The Peak District is an ideal place to conquer your first routes and pick up basic skills. There’s nothing quite so exhilarating as reaching the top of a natural crag, taking in the exposure and enjoying this natural, emotional and physical high. Its enjoyable at any level and under qualified supervision you can choose how tricky you want to make it. Wonderful fun for groups, couples or individuals.

Basic Crag Rope Work
For those wanting to learn and climb outdoors on there own, but don’t want the skills to “lead climb” outdoors just yet. Designed to help indoor climbers take their first steps to become self-reliant outside. Involving a thorough look at the equipment needed for outdoor climbing, instruction in its use, anchor selection and construction, ropes and rope work for outdoor top and bottom ropes. Develop understanding and self-reliance at the crag; it lays a firm foundation to build towards outdoor lead climbing. Ideally prior to the session you will need to be able to tie in to harness and belay.
Prior experience: Some indoor or outdoor climbing experience needed
Staff ratio: 1 instructor to up to 4 climbers

Outdoor lead climbing skills – Summer
Get an in-depth knowledge of all relevant climbing equipment and understand its correct use and capabilities in a lead climb position. Use this knowledge to create sound anchors and belays to safe guard you and your climbing partner.
This is what climbing is all about; the skills needed for the sharp end of the rope.
Before your lead climbing begins, the course will cover ropes and their management, equipment selection, and its preparation for your intended route.
Develop lead climbing strategies on route, picking up hints and tips whilst climbing under the close supervision of an expert instructor. Learn to plan your ascent, get the best out of your available equipment and improve your technique. Turn yourself from a novice into a climber.
Prior experience: Outdoor climbing experience needed

MLTE “Single Pitch Award”
The Single Pitch Award is a nationally recognised climbing instructor / supervisor award offered by the MLTUK Mountain Leader Training UK.
This is the standard for both professional and voluntary sector staff wishing to lead climbing sessions on the following types of climbs:
Non-tidal crags, with easy access to the top and bottom of the cliff
Climbs that are described as non-serious and single pitch.
Crags that are easy to access and not in remote / wilderness settings.
Indoor and man made climbing walls classified as single pitch or bouldering walls
For previously experienced climbers it involves a two day training course, consolidation period and a two day assessment at a future date. We usually hold the course in the Peak District but it can be run at other locations in the UK.
To gain this award you need more than just good personal climbing skills.
Our approved Course Providers will teach you about:
- Safe group management,
Indoor and out, crag etiquette,
Environmental and access responsibilities. - How to become an effective supervisor
- Encourage others to enjoy their climbing safely
- Improve your technical ropework skills.
To participate in the scheme, you must:
- Be over 18 years of age with 6-12 months personal rock climbing experience, with 15 climbs completed outdoors.
- Register for the scheme with the BMC and MLTUK
- Attend a 2 day training course
- Pursue a period of consolidation
- (Usually 6 - 12 months where you would need to achieve the following; 40 plus logged climbs, climbed in at least 3 different areas of the country, lead climb to at least ’severe’ standard, log 20 days assisting or group work sessions.)
- Obtain a recognised first aid qualification
- Attend a 2 day assessment course.
